Milky Chance, otherwise known as Clemens Rehbein and Philipp Dausch are one of the most exciting acts working in Germany at the moment. Beautifully rough, his vocals blew me away and left me desperate for more. What is perhaps most distinct about this duo is the raw, untainted quality of Rehbein’s voice. Add in the guitar and assisting DJ and you have a recipe for indie success. Leading man Rehbein, from his raspy vocals to his electrocuted hair, oozes cool. Consisting of Clemens Rehbein as vocalist/musician and Philipp Dausch as DJ, Milky Chance can best be described as a reggae/pop/folk hybrid: producing a genre of music so distinct that it almost deserves its own name. Singles ‘Stolen Dance’, ‘Down by the River’, ‘Flashed Junk Mind’ and ‘Fairytale’ were all a hit with the crowd and personal favourites. Their music is uplifting, almost spiritually so. Every festival-goers dream, Milky Chance provide a relaxed, chilled and fun atmosphere. Tunes ‘Stolen Dance’ and ‘Down by the River’ are outrageously catchy and summer perfect: try closing your eyes and swaying to either tune and it is only too easy to drift off to some magical, far away land where life is breezy and the sun is always shining. One of the most chilled yet addictive artists of the decade, let alone the year, Milky Chance is the quintessential lying-on-the-beach-soaking-up-the-sun-loving-life artist. The album then became a huge success which subsequently led Milky chance to numerous European tours. The song impressively reached over 30 million views. The single contains bright handclaps and plaintive acoustic guitars, which consequently led to the song becoming a viral sensation around the world. With the help of the record label, Milky Chance went on to record and then release their debut album "Sadnecessary" in 2013.Īfter the success of their album, the pair turned their skills to YouTube and decided to upload their first single "Stolen Dance" to see what reaction it would get. The German school friends are signed to record label Lichtdicht Records which is based in their home town of Kassel. Combining a sound they describe as 'elegant electronic production'.

Clemens and Philip decided ot keep making music together and found a style of their own. However, the group broke up after their drummer decided to leave. Clemens played the bass guitar and Philipp was the guitarist. During their school years they bonded and were both in a jazz quartet named Flown Tones. The German pair met at secondary school at the Jacob Grimm Schule in Kassel. Their musical influences combine reggae with electronic and pop and folk genres to make their own original sound. They continue to plumb sounds from distant lands, weaving in Portugal’s fado and collaborating with South African legends Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Australian musician Tash Sultana, and one of their biggest influences, Johnson, who joins them on 2020’s sprightly “Don’t Let Me Down.Milky chance consist of members, vocalist Clemens Rehbein and musician and Philipp Dausch who are also both DJ's. Sticky acoustic riffs always serve as the hooks that punchy, reggae-tinged (and sometimes hip-hop-leaning) grooves can grab onto with ease. Even as they’ve expanded on their sound since-incorporating the infectious rhythms of Afropop and Latin dance music on 2017’s Blossom and 2019’s Mind the Moon-there remains a folk-like simplicity to their work. After that ensemble disbanded, the two stuck together and began drawing from the sounds of childhood favorites like Bob Marley and Jack Johnson to create the minimalist, beat-driven melodies of tracks like “Flashed Junk Mind” and breakout single “Stolen Dance,” both highlights from their 2013 debut album, Sadnecessary. Before establishing themselves as Milky Chance in 2012, Rehbein and high school buddy and multi-instrumentalist Philipp Dausch played in a jazz quintet.

But zoom in a little closer and you’ll hear vocalist Clemens Rehbein giving us the straight dope as he ruminates on the frustrating cycles between love and loneliness. Milky Chance’s bright, breezy acoustic pop comes dipped in liquid synths, evoking a laidback life one would imagine far away from the duo’s central Germany hometown of Kassel.
